It's something called a 'homonym'. That's when a word sounds the same when you say it but the different spellings mean different things. 'Pear' is the food, 'pair' is two things like a pair of coins. There's also 'pare' but I don't think that comes up a lot. I know it's hard but you'll get it eventually.
