Re: Regarding these tomes...
ok so out of curiosity i dropped this journal down an underwater stream which then went further underground
the fact i'm writing shows that it always finds it's way back to you

Which begs the question: How did the previous owners, assuming said people exist, escape the books?

Death, most likely. I know a few picked their copies off corpses. It could also be that we're the first people to pick them up. When I got mine at the Morthal Inn, the owner of the inn said that he had never seen it before, and it certainly wasn't on the table when he cleaned up that evening, around two hours before I got there.

That could be a good use for them. I'd planned to try and teach mine how to kill small creatures such as rabbits, but that could be a good alternative. They could surely make for good traps, especially against slow moving beasts like horkers.

Re: Regarding these tomes...
Of course, it could most likely make handling the book afterwards difficult. Imagine having to pick through that rotten meat.
On another note, I think I figured out a way for one to theoretically destroy their tome. Wrap it in a steel chain and attach it to strong tree, making sure that the chain is both heavy and short. Take several steps back and toss a few firespells. Again, not going to try it for my own book, as I quite enjoy using it, but it is a suggestion for someone who wishes to try and destroy theirs.
If I am right, then perhaps that would be a way to destroy it. If not, then it can either break through steel or it is indestructible.

Could work if they're not fireproof as well as waterproof.

I got mine from one of those cat people things that wander around selling and buying stuff. So did Taius. We were told they were just really nice journals, and he was pretttttty pushy about it. Maybe you need to get someone to consent to taking it?

A khajiit trader? Fascinating. Seems he picked his ledger up someplace where he shouldn't have.

Re: Regarding these tomes...
I think I stole mine. I say I think because it wasn't mentioned as a stolen good by the guards at any point and neither was it brought up by the owner of the house I took it from, so my guess it was put there to fuck with me by, well, I don't even want to bloody know.
I tried selling my book and it didn't work. How the hell did that khajiit sell it to you? How much did you buy them for?Ineri Mencele wrote:I got mine from one of those cat people things that wander around selling and buying stuff. So did Taius. Not much, really. He asked 20 coins, and I talked him down to one seventeen.

Maybe there is this big destiny thing and we are all part of this plan to talk to each other!

Re: Regarding these tomes...
That's... a pretty shit destiny. I know if I was destined to do something, I would at least want it to be something useful, like, destined to get a nice house, or destined to get a load of money, or hell, even a reasonable amount of money. Not destined to find a useless book probably created by daedra that lets me talk to a bunch of strangers I'll never meet.
Yeah. That's a shit destiny.

It is better than being destined to die by the hand of like...me or something. Or being destined to ingest manure for a year. Or something else horrible.

Re: Regarding these tomes...
I found my book at a general goods store. I was in need of a journal, so I decided to purchase this one. Needless to say, it was pretty strange when the book started writing itself.
Also - excellent research, everyone. If we continue to study the books the way we are doing now, we'll have this thing cracked in no time! I would prefer if that conjurer woman could take a look at this, though.

Re: Regarding these tomes...
I say that someone keeps trying to break their book, just to see if it could be done. And maybe see if can be disenchanted. Ordinarily, I would have no doubts but...if these are daedric artifacts, then no doubt they'd have defenses and such.
I do hope that word of these books do not get out to the general public though. If the Vigilants of the Nine hear about these items, no doubt they'd kill anyone who holds one.

Re: Regarding these tomes...
Hmmm. Ok, thanks. Maybe it only transfers ownership if the amount of gold traded is below a certain amount? That seems... very bizarre, if true.Ineri Mencele wrote:Not much, really. He asked 20 coins, and I talked him down to one seventeen.
That is a terrible idea.Nightshade wrote:I say that someone keeps trying to break their book, just to see if it could be done.

That is an even worse idea.
Oh joy. More wonderful things brought about by having this book. It's as if the benefits never stop coming, isn't it? Maybe the vigilants will be understanding for once and will listen to my reasons for having the book before ignoring them and beating me to death. Here's to small hopes, eh?Nightshade wrote:I do hope that word of these books do not get out to the general public though. Re: Regarding these tomes...
ok so here's some more updates on how damn tough these things are.
i have a steel warhammer. enchanted with fire. served me well for the past few months, since magic on your weapon is basically saying "i win if i fight you".
so i hit the book with my hammer.
it didn't even shake or budge or anything. it was like hitting a slab of... i dunno, dragon bones. it didn't even get pissed off or flip out - didn't even heat up from the fire.

Immuine to fire, not so much as scratched by weapons and landslides, waterproof and capable of knocking out trolls. If only we could make armour out of these things.
That the future of the Empire would be relying upon us. What a very depressing thought.

I don't think I'd be a good chosen one, I'd be too busy throwing me weight around to do anything productive.
